This course is designed for flexibility in an attempt to serve the needs of beginners and more experienced researchers alike. There are a number of ways in which you might approach the materials presented here, depending on whether you require information from the ground up or merely a convenient reference/practice resource.

Palaeography Tutorial (National Archives - UK)

Ten documents arranged from easiest to hardest. Each document is supplemented by historical background information, a glossary, notes on the paleography, a sample alphabet taken from the document, and a full transcript. Some website features require Adobe Flash Player, which is no longer supported. However, each tutorial is also available in PDF format:

An overview of language and handwriting developments, the influence of the Latin language, and individual letter and number forms.

German Paleography Seminar (FamilySearch, 2020)

This nine-part digital video series will teach you to recognize important genealogical terms and common German names written in Kurrent, a style of German writing that grew out of late medieval cursive script and was used into the early 20th century. Follow along with a printable handwriting practice worksheet that models how to form each capital and lowercase letter.
